UMADA CUP GUYANA 2014

The Guyana Chess Federation is proud to host the 5th Annual Umada Cup. Top players from Caribbean Countries are excited and ready for the challenge where there will be great cash prizes to be won. The tournament will be held at the Sleep-Inn International Hotel, Brickdam Georgetown, starting from 27th November, 2014 and concludes on 1st December, 2014. After which a presentation ceremony will be held.

Guyanese chess players have recently shown great improvement when they participated
in the 41st Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway with two local players, Anthony Drayton and Ronuel Greenidge being promoted to Candidate Masters after turning in credible performances.
Those two players now join with other local players to contest for honours when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) hosts the Umada Cup 2014.

Irshad Mohamad revealed that 17 countries have been invited to compete and to date more than 10 of them have endorsed their participation; he is confident that this number will increase before the competition gets underway.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Frank Anthony attended the press conference and in delivering brief remarks noted that chess continues to be one of the rapidly developing disciplines. He said that he is confident that the Federation is capable of hosting the tournament saying it is a major milestone for the improvement and development of the sport. “I am truly excited from the Ministry’s point of view and must note the input of (FIDE) President, (Kirsan Llyumzhinov), who facilitated local chess players’ involvement in international tournaments that witnessed vast improvement of Guyanese players,” said Mr. Anthony.

Meanwhile, the tournament will be played in the Conference Centre of the Sleep Inn Hotel and Mr. Mohamed revealed that the competition will be divided into two categories, Open and Challenge. He did not disclose the participants in the respective categories but hinted that most of the local stalwarts will be representing Guyana. He explained that this country enjoys such privileges as the host country.
The GCF President further issued an invitation to all Guyanese to visit the venue and support the local players during the tournament.
